~ June, 2021 ~ Disgraced ex-Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. is asking a judge to toss the school’s multimillion-dollar lawsuit against him — because he says the suit is only meant to shame him.
The conservative Virginia university, founded by Falwell’s late famous religious-right dad, sued him for tens of millions of dollars in April over his scandalous departure from the evangelical Lynchburg school — amid claims that included his wife, Becki, having an affair with a pool boy while her hubby watched.
Falwell says in the new court papers that the school’s suit focuses on his and his wife’s personal life rather than the job he did at the university, according to Lynchburg’s News & Advance.
“The rehashing of these events and protected defamation of Falwell through litigation serves one mission — ruining Falwell’s reputation through mischaracterization of events and public shaming through out-of-context pictures filed in a public complaint,” say documents filed in Lynchburg Circuit Court on Tuesday.
Falwell left Liberty in August after Giancarlo Granda — who met Becki when he was a hotel pool boy in 2012 — came forward with claims about their yearslong affair in which Falwell allegedly was a spectator. Falwell denied those claims.
Becki was also accused of engaging in sexual acts with a former student, while it surfaced that Falwell also posted a photo of himself on a yacht with his pants unzipped and his arm around a woman.
Liberty’s suit claims that Falwell withheld the racy parts of his life when he secured a 2019 contract — including a $1.5 million raise and a $2.5 million severance package — a year before the damaging claims came to light.
Falwell counters in the new court papers that he wasn’t obliged to tell the school details about his personal life.
