If you had any doubt that Bridgerton‘s sex scenes are real, Daphne Bridgerton is here to remind you. In a new Glamour profile, Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor revealed that she was told to actually “have an orgasm” while filming a masturbation scene, a moment that proved particularly difficult to rehearse. Yeah, you don’t say!
The cast of Bridgerton has been open about working with an intimacy coordinator during the show’s many sex scenes, but Dynevor told Glamour that acting alone, rather than with her frequent scene partner Regé-Jean Page, required putting even more trust in her on-set advocate. When asked about working with intimacy coordinator Lizzy Talbot on a masturbation scene, Dynevor said that the moment was “the hardest scene to shoot,” as she was the focal point on set.
“On my own, it’s a different thing,” said Dynevor, after explaining that working with Page felt more like doing “stunts” than sex scenes. “The stage directions are very specific: You have to have an orgasm. It’s a difficult thing to rehearse, which means you don’t. You just do it.”
“I always get back to the fact that Lizzy was on set for that scene,” continued the Bridgerton star. “If we didn’t have an intimacy coordinator, it would be our director, who was a male, coming up to me and telling me what to do. That would have been awkward.”
Dynevor added that she “felt so safe in the knowledge” that an intimacy coordinator was nearby, as Talbot could serve as an intermediary between her and the male director, if needed. “If something went wrong or the director wanted something different he could speak to her first. I think it would have been a very difficult experience if Lizzy hadn’t been on set protecting me and looking after me,” she concluded. “No one wants to be told how to orgasm by a man.”
